Book Club Review of Off Script

HELLO FRIENDS!

As you know from my past Book Club Review “Greenlights” by Matthew McConaughey, I like to recommend a good memoir especially when it is about someone’s career journey.

Marci Ien’s new book “Off Script: Living Out Loud” fits the criteria!

I became aware of Marci via The Social. A show I never used to watch but in 2015, while recovering from my cancer surgery my Mom came to live with me for a week and she got me into it. I loved the diversity of topics and viewpoints. When Marci joined the show I really took to her story. She had just gone through a HUGE career transition, and I knew I was about to go through one myself in a couple of years. Yes, I knew about it…a story for another day!

Flash forward to 2 years later in 2017 and I had just begun my BIG career transition. My Mom got us tickets to hear Marci speaking about transitioning careers for a Women of Influence event. We went to a taping of The Social during the afternoon then headed to the event. Marci immediately recognized us from the audience of The Social and came over to chat. She truly listened as I explained my current career transition and future goals. I took a lot away from her talk that day and I was thrilled when I heard she was writing a book.

Her book was a quick read for me. Very easy to get into filled with lots of great stories and tips. I was quite inspired by Marci’s career journey and her career pivots along the way.

If your career is on your list of goals or intentions for 2021 this is a great book to pick up for inspiration.

A poem Marci references at the start of her book (and the name of her son) that her Dad, a High School Principal, would read to his student body every year, called “The Dash” by Linda Ellis really resonated with me. Check it out if you are looking for some inspiration to kick off the year. Here is an excerpt but I strongly recommend reading the whole thing.

“He referred to the dates on their tombstone from beginning…to the end. He notes that first came the date of birth and spoke of the following date with tears, but he said what mattered most of all was the dash between those years. For that dash represents all the time they spent alive on earth and now only those who loved them know what that little line is worth. For it matters not, how much we own, the cars…the house…the cash. What matters is how we live and love and how we spend our dash.”

So…how will you spend your DASH?

Sending you healthy and hopeful vibes always 😊
